1. Sunnydaze Garden Cart Rolling Scooter

**Best Overall Garden Scooter

Sunnydaze Garden Cart Rolling Scooter

Full Product Specifications:

  • Length: 31 inches
  • Width: 18 inches
  • Height: 22 inches
  • Product Weight: 30 pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 300 pounds
  • Adjustable Seat Height: Yes
  • Tire/Wheel Size and Type: 10-inch pneumatic tires

This scooter from Sunnydaze takes the top spot for a few reasons:

  • Contoured, full-swiveling seat
  • Easy-to-use, adjustable handle
  • Large pneumatic tires
  • Two storage areas
  • Sturdy steel construction

Jen Stark, master gardener and founder of Happy DIY Home, agrees. “I love the Sunnydaze Garden Cart Rolling Scooter because it is durable, lightweight and rust-resistant. It has a heavy-duty steel frame with an extendable handle that makes it easy to maneuver through even tight spaces. Plus, the basket allows you to store and transport all the necessary tools and supplies with ease.”

The metal seat swivels a full 360 degrees, so objects are within easy reach in every direction. Plus, the contoured shape adds a little extra comfort and stability while you work. The seat also has a central screw mechanism that lets you adjust the seat height to your preference between 16.6 and 22 inches.

One point I really appreciate about this scooter has a pivoting front axle that makes steering the front wheels easy. You’re not just limited to going straight forward, and it’s easy to steer around corners. Another handy feature is the telescoping pull handle- it has 5 inches of adjustment that extend your scooters overall length between 42 and 47 inches.

A lower storage tray and rear wire basket give you a handy place to stash small necessities, like a bottle of water or hand tools. There’s also a wire storage basket, but unfortunately, it’s a little on the small side.

PROS

  • Steel frame and axles with powder-coated finish
  • Telescoping handle
  • Large pneumatic tires
  • Adjustable seat height and 360-degree swivel

CONS

  • Wire basket is small

2. Best Choice Products 4-Wheel Garden Cart

**Best Garden Scooter Runner-Up

Best Choice Products 4-Wheel Garden Cart

Full Product Specifications:

  • Length: 33 inches
  • Width: 17.5 inches
  • Height: 23 inches
  • Product Weight: 33 pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 300 pounds
  • Adjustable Seat Height: Yes
  • Tire/Wheel Size and Type: 10-inch pneumatic tires

Trevor Lively, president of Blue Jay Irrigation, recommends this scooter as his top choice for gardening and outdoor projects of all kinds. “The cart is made of heavy-duty steel and rubber tires, which makes it durable and robust. Its 90-degree turnable bar makes shifting effortless.”

According to Trevor, one of this scooter’s best features is the seat construction. “It has an adjustable swivel seat, which ensures you don’t have to go through any severe body aches. Thus, it makes your gardening experience more fun and comfortable.”

Instead of a long pull-handle, this scooter from Best Choice Products features a shorter steering handle on a 90-degree pivot. This makes it much easier if you prefer to steer from a sitting position rather than standing up to pull your scooter down the garden row.

The large, air-filled tires roll smoothly over rough terrain and reduce jolts as you scoot from one task to the next. The swiveling seat rotates a full 360 degrees, and the seat height is adjustable from 16 to 20 inches.

Two built-in storage areas help you keep your small items at the ready. However, the wire basket is a bit small.

PROS

  • Easy to steer from a seated position
  • Solid steel frame
  • Adjustable swivel seat

CONS

  • Small wire storage basket

3. Pure Garden Rolling Scooter

**Best Budget Garden Scooter

Pure Garden Rolling Scooter

Full Product Specifications:

  • Length: 17.5 inches
  • Width: 19 inches
  • Height: 13 inches
  • Product Weight: 7.28 pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 200 pounds
  • Adjustable Seat Height: No
  • Tire/Wheel Size and Type: 6-inch molded plastic wheels

If you’re looking for a simple garden scooter without all the extra bells and whistles, this little option from Pure Garden could be a great choice. Also, thanks to the simple design, this is the least expensive option we’re looking at here.

Alex Tinsman, founder and chief editor of How to Houseplant, likes this scooter because of its lightweight but strong design. “It’s the perfect option when whizzing around in the tightest garden spaces such as between hedges, beneath shrubs and around plantings. It is also made of stainless steel and durable PVC plastic to last.”

This little scooter stands 13 inches tall at the seat, putting the ground and those pesky weeds within easy reach. However, there is no adjustability setting.

One thing to be aware of is that the seat itself is a bit on the small side. At 11 inches long and 11.5 inches wide, some people may find that they may have a hard time sitting comfortably while they work. Despite its small size, this scooter can hold up to 200 pounds.

PROS

  • Low price point
  • Lightweight and easy to move
  • Handy lower storage tray
  • Comes fully pre-assembled

CONS

  • The seat is fairly small
  • Seat is not adjustable

4. Suncast Outdoor Rolling Garden Scooter

**Best Seat Design

Suncast Outdoor Rolling Garden Scooter

Full Product Specifications:

  • Length: 24.8 inches
  • Width: 14.7 inches
  • Height: 14 inches
  • Product Weight: 9 pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 225 pounds
  • Adjustable Seat Height: No
  • Tire/Wheel Size and Type: 6-inch molded resin wheels

When it comes to a stable place to sit while you work, you can’t beat the surface area this scooter offers. Measuring 24.8 inches long and 14.7 inches wide, this model makes for a stable and comfortable gardening seat.

One downside is that the height is not adjustable. While 14 inches is probably an ideal height for most people, you may find it a bit uncomfortable if you’re very tall.

The scooter’s hollow interior is a great place to stash your hand tools or even a small bag of soil. You also get a bonus garden hand-basket and a removable seating pad that does double duty as a garden kneeler.

A long pull-strap makes it easy to move your scooter around the garden, and the product itself is lightweight at just shy of 9 pounds. Despite the lightweight material, this scooter can safely support up to 225 pounds.

PROS

  • Generous seating area
  • Lots of helpful bonus pieces and features
  • No-flat resin wheels
  • Lightweight and easy to pull

CONS

  • The height is not adjustable

5. Miracle-Gro 4-in-1 Roll and Kneel

**Best Multi-Function

Miracle-Gro 4-in-1 Roll and Kneel

Full Product Specifications:

  • Length: 23 inches
  • Width: 9.2 inches
  • Height: 11.4 inches
  • Product Weight: 4.4 pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 225 pounds
  • Adjustable Seat Height: No
  • Tire/Wheel Size and Type: Molded plastic wheels

You get a total of four separate functions to suit the task at hand:

  1. Flat-top garden scooter
  2. Stationary garden stool
  3. Padded kneeling mat
  4. Rolling storage bin

We’ll be looking at the flat-top scooter function in detail here.

Note: For more suggestions for comfortable kneeling options or stationary seats, check out our posts on the best garden kneelers and 10 Best Garden Stools available today.

This scooter offers a seating area that’s 23 inches long and 9.2 inches wide, making it a fairly spacious seat. One thing I don’t like is the deeply grooved seat surface, which could become uncomfortable after a long day’s work.

Thanks to the plastic material, this scooter weighs in at a feather-weight 4.4 pounds! The seat top also has a flip-up handle, so you can pick your scooter up and carry it if you want. But, surprisingly, the upper weight capacity is an impressive 225 pounds.

The plastic wheels travel smoothly over small bumps, and removing the detachable kneeler/stool portion reveals a handy inner storage bin.

PROS

  • Exceptional versatility
  • Ultra-light and easily portable
  • Inner storage bin
  • No assembly required

CONS

  • Deeply grooved seat surface

6. TheXceptional Wheelie with Tool Toter Handle and Bucket

**Best Made in USA

TheXceptional Wheelie with Tool Toter Handle and Bucket

Full Product Specifications:

  • Length: 36 inches
  • Width: 14 inches
  • Height: 33 inches
  • Product Weight: 18 pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 240 pounds
  • Adjustable Seat Height: Yes
  • Tire/Wheel Size and Type: 10-inch heavy-duty plastic wheels

This scooter is made by Vertex Products, a company that proudly 100% manufactures their garden tools in the USA.

One of the nicest aspects of this scooter is the easy-up handle. As opposed to most scooter handles that rest on the ground, this handle has a fixed upright position that gives you something sturdy to grasp as you’re standing up. This feature alone makes this scooter an accommodative tool for senior or disabled gardeners.

The all-plastic design provides excellent durability in the elements with no risk of rust damage. But even though it’s plastic, this scooter can accommodate weights up to 240 pounds.

At 10 inches in diameter and 3 inches in width, the wheels have great stability and durability, and airless design means you’ll never have to worry about getting a flat tire. One drawback, though, is that these tires may struggle to roll easily over soft ground, like freshly-turned earth or straw mulch.

Thanks to a contoured shape, the seat is comfortable even for extended garden projects. A 360-degree swiveling seat lets you pinpoint your positioning, and the seat height is adjustable from 15 inches to 18 inches tall.

PROS

  • Made in the USA
  • Easy-up stand assist handle
  • Large, industrial-grade plastic wheels
  • No danger of rust damage

CONS

  • May not roll smoothly over soft ground

7. Gardener’s Supply Company Deluxe Tractor Scooter

**Best Weight Capacity

Gardener's Supply Company Deluxe Tractor Scooter

Full Product Specifications:

  • Length: 44.5 inches long (including handle)
  • Width: 18 inches
  • Height: 22 inches
  • Product Weight: 37 pounds
  • Weight Capacity: 400 pounds
  • Adjustable Seat Height: Yes
  • Tire/Wheel Size and Type: 10-inch pneumatic tires

Thanks to a steel frame and axle, this scooter can support up to 400 pounds, making it the strongest option on my list today.

Besides the impressive weight capacity, the seat adjusts from as low as 16 inches to a maximum of 19 inches and also offers a full 360-degree swivel. With a contoured shape, the seat helps you stay comfortably and firmly in place while you’re hard at work.

The wire storage basket is large enough to accommodate a 5-gallon bucket, so you have plenty of space to haul garden supplies. A lower storage tray also gives you a convenient place to stash your gloves or hand tools.

The telescoping handle has three length settings, so you can pick the one that lets you pull your scooter comfortably. When fully retracted, you can also secure the handle in the upright position, keeping it conveniently out of your way while you work.

PROS

  • Lots of great features at a lower price point
  • 400-pound weight limit
  • Adjustable-length handle
  • Roomy storage basket

CONS

  • Heavy

How to Choose the Best Garden Scooter

There are many garden scooters out there to pick from, and familiarizing yourself with the basic scooter parts can help you identify which features might be most helpful for you.

In this section, I’m going to break each of these components down:

  1. Wheel or tire design
  2. Frame material
  3. Seat construction
  4. Ease of mobility
  5. Weight capacity
  6. Assembly
  7. Cost

1. Wheel or Tire Design

Pneumatic, or air-filled, tires are top-notch for easily crossing almost any type of ground. The typical size for pneumatic tires is 10 inches, and their larger size allows them to roll over bumps or ruts with less risk of getting stuck.

One drawback to pneumatic tires is the danger of going flat. This might happen naturally over time, or you may inadvertently roll over a sharp object that punctures the tire. If you get a flat, you may be able to replace the inner tube and simply refill the tire with fresh air. However, you may be looking at a total replacement if the damage is severe.

Molded plastic or resin wheels eliminate the chance of a flat tire. But these types of wheels also tend to be smaller, usually around 6 inches in diameter. Smaller wheels are more likely to get lodged in ruts or roll roughly over bumpy surfaces.

2. Frame Material

Steel garden scooters use welded joints and steel or iron hardware to create a solid frame that can last for years. Most well-built models also have a durable powder-coated finish to protect the paint job and guard against rust.

However, frequently leaving your scooter out in the elements creates the risk for a rust spot developing. So you’re best off to store your steel scooter indoors between uses and over the winter.

Even though it can never match the strength of steel, most plastic scooters use industrial-grade plastic that is surprisingly resilient.

One of the great things about plastic is that there’s no risk of rust damage. So even if you store your plastic scooter outdoors or forget to bring it in, you shouldn’t have to worry about finding a rusted mess. However, some plastic scooters may still have iron or steel hardware, and these are susceptible to rusting. If you want to completely eliminate the risk of rust, choose an all-plastic model.

Another potential issue with plastic is that it may grow brittle from excessive sun exposure. If this happens, you may run into issues with cracks at pressure points or on the seating area.

3. Seat Construction

The contoured seats that most tractor-style scooters offer tend to rank highest on the comfort scale. What’s more, most of these seats have 360-degree pivot and adjustable seat height settings. In terms of features, you just can’t beat this type of seat design.

On the other hand, scooters that have a stationary-seat design often have the benefit of a larger seating area. This is due mostly to the fact that these models usually have a flat top that doubles as a roomy seat.

4. Ease of Mobility

If your outdoor space is large, you’ll probably appreciate being able to easily pull your scooter from place to place. Models with a handle or rope are typically the best for easy steering.

A front axle with a 90-degree pivot cuts down on time and effort to steer around corners and curves. You can still navigate with fixed-position front wheels, but you will have to plan on taking wider turns.

For garden scooters that lack a steering mechanism, you can push them along with your foot or bend down and push with your hands. This isn’t quite as convenient as a pull handle, but it gets the job done, albeit with a little extra effort on your part.

5. Weight Capacity

In general, steel scooters can support a higher weight than their plastic counterparts. Thanks to strong metal and welded joints, you can typically expect a steel scooter to support a minimum of 300 pounds. Many models can easily accommodate much more than that.

While plastic has a lower weight capacity, many plastic scooters can bear a surprising amount, often between 200-225 pounds.

6. Assembly

Most metal-frame garden scooters require at least some assembly, usually just requiring basic hand tools and rudimentary skills. This video from Sunnydaze demonstrates the assembly process:

If you’d rather avoid the assembly process altogether, many plastic scooters come ready-to-use right out of the box.

7. Cost

Garden scooters with metal frames, pneumatic tires and pull handles are usually at the top of the price scale. Even though you’re looking at a higher initial investment, these scooters typically feature quality construction and materials that last for years.

If you’re working with a smaller budget, scooters with plastic frames and wheels typically tend to cost less.

Why Should You Use a Garden Scooter?

More than just fun pieces of outdoor equipment, garden scooters can serve several very important purposes:

  • Make gardening more accessible for seniors or people with a disability
  • Enhances comfort while working outdoors
  • Can help make gardening safer

Gardening is an excellent hobby for anyone, but it has unique benefits to offer seniors. If a garden scooter can help you or a loved one take advantage of those benefits, it might end up being worth its weight in gold!

Let’s take a closer look at some of the specific ways a garden scooter can be an outdoor help.

Help Prevent Kneecap Bursitis

Your knees are amazingly strong joints that can bear a lot of abuse. But repeated kneeling, especially on a hard surface, can lead to a painful condition called kneecap bursitis

This condition happens when protective tissue in your knees becomes inflamed and swollen. Besides being painful, there is a risk that the damaged tissue could become infected.

Preventing kneecap bursitis is your best bet, and a garden scooter can help by sparing you from kneeling for many garden tasks.

Even if you already have knee cap bursitis, a scooter can still be a good idea. As long as it’s not infected, bursitis usually goes on its own when you stop the aggravating behavior (like kneeling).

Can Reduce Back Pain

Many times, back pain from gardening originates from trying to work in an unnatural body posture. These have definitely been part of my experience:

  • Reaching or contorting yourself to pull pesky weeds growing in inconvenient spots
  • Hunching over as you work
  • Weak or underused core muscles, especially those in the low back

Garden scooters can relieve some of that back strain by letting you do your work from a low, seated position. This gives you a better opportunity to practice better body mechanics and reduce your chance of injury and discomfort.

May Encourage More Rest Breaks

One key strategy for surviving an all-day garden project is to take frequent breaks. But it’s all too easy to skip those rest periods when you have to completely stop your work and walk to another area to sit down or have a drink of water.

Garden scooters make it easy to take a quick breather without totally interrupting your gardening momentum. Since you already have a comfortable seat with you, stopping to rest or hydrate becomes a natural part of your workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions about Garden Scooters

Garden scooters are readily available to purchase from online retailers, and chain home improvement stores usually carry a good selection as well. If you would like to support a small business, independent local garden centers/nurseries typically have scooters for sale as well.

Most garden scooters can roll easily over grass, compacted earth and gravel with no problem. If you’re working with freshly-turned ground or areas with rocky ground, a scooter with pneumatic tires that are at least 8 inches in diameter will work best.

Final Thoughts

Gardening is a physical activity, and it’s a great way to get some exercise while also connecting with nature and growing something beautiful.

In my experience, garden scooters won’t eliminate the physical strain of outdoor work, but they can reduce it to safer, more comfortable levels. What’s not to love about doing the garden you love with less pain and effort?

I’d love to hear from you! Have you used a garden scooter? What kind of scooter did you choose, and what was your experience like? Are there any points I missed here? We learn best from one another, so let us know your thoughts in the comments!
